Maybe it would be better if you said which file/format you tried. Otherwise nobody can help. MP4 for example supports AAC audio or AMR narrow or AMR wide band audio codecs. I don't think ipod can play unless its AAC but I'm not sure.

You could also try converting using SUPER on the PC. It converts just about anything to anything else...it has a ton of customizable options
